Welcome back to the UND AI Series — and welcome to 2026 and the start of the spring semester! In this talk, Dr. Jeremy Straub (Associate Professor, Computer Science, North Dakota State University) breaks down “vibe coding”: developing software with AI using a human-on-the-loop approach—where people provide direction and oversight, but the AI handles most of the line-by-line implementation.
Jeremy walks through:
- What vibe coding is (and why “like it or not,” it’s becoming mainstream)
- The human-in-the-loop vs. human-on-the-loop vs. human-is-the-loop continuum
- A practical vibe-coding workflow: design → AI code generation → testing/validation/refinement
- Why design and data modeling matter more than ever (especially for constraining AI outputs)
- The biggest risks today—especially security issues—and why testing is non-negotiable
- How vibe coding changes the “speed/cost/quality” triangle and the overall software development paradigm
- What this means for jobs, junior developer pathways, and CS education
- The growing importance of communication, requirements translation, and stakeholder collaboration
- Real audience Q&A on tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini Canvas), hallucinations/confabulation, recursive “sloppy code” concerns, and liability/contracts in AI-assisted development
