ColecoVision Roller Controller — Arcade-Quality Trackball Controller to Bring the Arcade Experience Home.
In 1983, ColecoVision took a bold step forward with the release of the ColecoVision Roller Controller Trackball which is a dedicated, arcade-quality trackball system that elevated home gaming beyond the joystick. At a time when competing consoles were still tied to clunky or imprecise control schemes, the Roller Controller delivered fast, fluid gameplay that finally brought the arcade experience into the living room.
Controller Design: Built for the Real Arcade Feel. Unlike the trackball accessories made by Atari, the ColecoVision Roller Controller was a large tabletop device with a true 360° optical trackball, four fire buttons (two on each side), and a toggle switch that let you flip between Trackball Mode (analog) and Joystick Mode (digital emulation).
Smart Power Design: Plugged into both controller ports and the power jack on the ColecoVision. For ADAM Computer users, it came with a custom power adapter—ensuring full compatibility with ADAM Computer Expansion Module #3.
Graphics & Sound — Enhanced by the Right Controller: While the Roller Controller Trackball didn’t change the internal graphics or sound chip of the ColecoVision, it let players experience faster and smoother action in games that supported high-speed input. Titles like Slither and Omega Race came alive with Smooth Pixel movement thanks to the precise analog tracking of the roller ball. Responsive sound effects triggered by accurate, split-second control. Arcade-faithful gameplay that matched (and in some cases rivaled) the original Arcade Cabinets that they were based on. ColecoVision already had some of the sharpest visuals and sound for its era, and the Roller Controller gave players the input precision needed to fully enjoy them.
The ColecoVision Roller Controller Trackball features a large weighted Arcade Quality Trackball for smooth 360-degree analog movement, housed in a durable Arcade-style base with eight action buttons, four on each side, making it accessible for both left and right-handed players. It connects via a hardwired controller cord to the ColecoVision console and includes a switch to toggle between RollerTrackball and Joystick mode for broader game compatibility.
It was packaged with an ADAM Adapter to ensure full compatibility with the Coleco ADAM Computer System. The unit does not use batteries or external power, and the standard cord length measures approximately 6 feet. A distinctive part of the ColecoVision lineup, it is not labeled as an “Expansion Module,” but functionally acts as a specialty controller rather than a numbered system expansion like Expansion Module #1 or #2.
