The Shankill Road Ulster Defence Association leader was sent back to jail to serve out the rest of his sentence for directing terrorism after he was arrested at the height of a vicious shooting war with rival loyalists which left several men dead in the summer of 2000.
The paramilitary, from the lower Shankill area of west Belfast, was returned to jail by former Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Mandelson.
About 300 of the UDA chief's supporters had gathered for his early morning release.
All six of the paramilitary groupings inner command were among those waving flags and cheering as Adair, dressed in a red and white T-shirt, jeans and baseball cap emerged from a prison van.
