In Episode 2, the last video in this video series, UDoit Fabricates a Truck Bed Extender for long materials. I made a measurement mistake as documented in the first episode. In this video you'll see how I overcome this error. It was a great lesson to learn as I had to determine the best way to resolve it. And I'll be sure to double check measurements before proceeding to welding.
The extender provides enough support to comfortably transport material that is 12 feet in length. It has uprights to keep material within the length of the support bar. And it features loops that tie downs can be attached to, which will help to better secure the load.
The build requirements I set was to use my Evolution Miter Saw and it needs to be welded together using MIG welding. My goal is to get better at welding and the only way at the moment is to get my practice time in. I designed the bed extender in Fusion 360 using 2-inch steel tubing with 0.25 inch wall thickness. It also required hitch receiver tubing, which is 2 1/2 inch steel tubing with a 0.219 inch wall thickness. I purchased from Joseph Fazzio's, Inc., which is 20 minutes from my house. I had to go back because I wasn't clear when I ordered the receiver tube and I was given 2 1/2 inch square tubing with a 0.25 inch wall thickness. This will not work.
