In Episode 1 of this video series, UDoit Fabricates a Truck Bed Extender for long materials. I decided to fabricate this to force myself to learn welding. I researched what is required to build an extender and it requires 2-inch square tubing to fit inside the hitch receiver. And I chose 1/4 wall thickness to provide additional strength.
I wanted the extender to provide an additional 20 inches to 2 feet of support. And, I want the width of the extender to be 50 inches wide, which is the width between the fenders within the bed of my Dodge Ram truck.
The build requirements I set was to use my Evolution Miter Saw and it needs to be welded together using MIG welding. My goal is to get better at welding and the only way at the moment is to get my practice time in. I designed the bed extender in Fusion 360 using 2-inch steel tubing with 0.25 inch wall thickness. It also required hitch receiver tubing, which is 2 1/2 inch steel tubing with a 0.219 inch wall thickness. I purchased from Joseph Fazzio's, Inc., which is 20 minutes from my house. I had to go back because I wasn't clear when I ordered the receiver tube and I was given 2 1/2 inch square tubing with a 0.25 inch wall thickness. This will not work.
