Uber Axes 3,300 Jobs as Robotaxis Threaten to Cut Out the Middleman
Uber is cutting approximately 3,300 corporate jobs, representing 10% of its global workforce, as it restructures for an increasingly autonomous future.
Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said the overhaul would reduce management layers, merge teams and create a simpler, faster company. Savings will be reinvested across ride-hailing, delivery and robotaxis, with Uber committing more than $10 billion to autonomous-vehicle technology and partnerships.
The redundancies affect employees, not the millions of self-employed drivers and couriers using its platform. Uber has provided no regional breakdown.
Its strategy increasingly positions Uber as the marketplace through which passengers summon driverless vehicles developed by outside companies. That may preserve its app and customer base as Waymo, Tesla and Zoox expand, but it also highlights the danger: autonomous operators could eventually connect directly with passengers and cut Uber out.
Robotaxi services remain concentrated mainly in America, although Uber’s transformation has much broader implications for its operations worldwide.
