Funding Feud Could Drive National Motor Museum From Beaulieu Before 2030
The National Motor Museum could leave Beaulieu before its lease expires in 2030, amid reported tensions over funding, governance and admission revenue.
The museum’s charitable trust has described the search for a “transformational” new home as an opportunity to improve access, education and preservation of its 285 vehicles and 1.9 million objects.
Autocar reports that negotiations over a replacement lease and new commercial arrangements broke down. An unnamed source claims the trust receives a small proportion of Beaulieu’s £27.56 admission charge, despite the museum allegedly generating around three quarters of visitors.
The source says this arrangement made the museum unviable and prevented it securing National Lottery funding without structural changes. Beaulieu disputes suggestions that negotiations ended suddenly and says a review remains ongoing.
No replacement site has been selected, although at least 50,000 square feet is reportedly required. Visitors should experience no immediate change while the search continues.
