This is one of my favorite videos I've made in recent months, the 2 Volvo Amrep Octo ASLs on one of my favorite routes found in California City.
After receiving a tip from Aaron that California City was now serviced by WM, Alex looked around on Bing Maps and found the new WM yard out here. After seeing that they ran a Volvo Octo, Autocar Python and Mack LE Octo for residential and the only truck for commercial was a Volvo Octo FL (which turns out to be an Edge) we decided to head out here almost immediately. Upon arrival we found that the Python was back in the main yard in Palmdale and another Octo ASL was out here as a spare. Being that these are 2 of only a few WX Octos WM has left, that was a welcomed surprise. As it turns out, they've sent a WXLL McNeilus FL out here from Corona as the front-line commercial truck, so we never got to see the main truck we came for, the Edge. We did however find this Amrep (101005) handling the trash. After filming 101005 for a fair bit, the truck developed a hydraulic issue and so he was forced to take it in and pull the spare out. That was bad news for him, but awesome news for us as it meant we got to see both of the Octos running the same route. It's definitely no surprise why 101002 is the spare either. Having fire damage to the body, missing grille and a rough arm made it a good candidate for the position, but it was definitely a fun one to see on route.
Since filming, the Python has been sent back to California City and only one Octo now runs these routes, but will likely be retired some time soon. Having passed through here 2 times after filming this, we have still never been lucky enough to see the Edge front loader on route.
