For the two step take off the athlete holds both hands above the head. The take off foot (in this case the left foot) should be almost directly under the top hand. The set up of the take off position is very important. If the take off foot is too close then too much pressure is put on the top arm to move the pole over. If the take off foot is too far away it doesn't allow a connection at take off to be able to move the pole forwards.
In these drills the athlete does not want to extend the grip too much but the athlete needs to be sure to be fully extended at take off with a straight top and driving through with the take off foot.
At take off the athlete needs to drive the top arm fowards so to move the pole to the vertical.
