Health officials across the country are seeing a rise in cyclosporiasis cases this year, with dozens of states reporting more infections than in previous years.
The multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis has expanded to nine states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday. Outbreaks in Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania have now been connected to cases in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia, as well as hard-hit Michigan.
Shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms de Mexico is the likely source, the Food and Drug Administration said last week. The company voluntarily recalled the product from the U.S. market.
In Washington state, the issue is drawing attention from the Washington State Department of Health.
Secretary Dennis Worsham joined ARC Seattle co-anchor Steve McCarron to talk about how concerned residents should be about cyclosporiasis, how many cases have been identified in Washington, and whether any Washington cases are connected to the national outbreak. Worsham also talked about any precautions that should be taken.
