Federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., are seeking to seize more than $25 million in cryptocurrency tied to international romance and investment scams. The crackdown is part of a broader effort in which U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has already frozen more than $800 million for victims, she told The National News Desk in a one-on-one interview.
Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said her office filed a civil forfeiture complaint last week targeting the cryptocurrency, describing it as the latest recovery under “Strike Force” efforts launched through a scam center she created in November 2025.
Pirro said her office has made it a priority to pursue “those who are involved in transnational criminal organizations,” which she said are “for the most part, Chinese and Southeast Asian countries who are targeting Americans through cryptocurrency fraud.” She said scammers use familiar platforms and tactics to lure victims, including “social media, whether it's ex or Instagram or Tinder,” as well as messages that appear to be sent to the wrong person, such as, “Aren't you coming for dinner tonight?”
