Welcome back to YOU Can beatbox, the tutorial series where YOU learn how to beatbox.Todays episode is part 3 in the how to perform miniseries and we're gonna learn how you should act on stage aka stage presence aka stage swagger.
Before we look at specific ways to gain stage presence, think about who you are as a person. No this is not some esoteric "meaning of life" beatbox tutorial, but just think about your personality type. Are you an outgoing person or more of an introvert? Do you enjoy being in large social settings like parties or do you prefer hanging with a smaller crew? As much as I hate the use of labels, they can definitely be useful such as here. Basically, try and figure out how you see yourself: either you're 1) comfortable with public speaking and having people focus on you or 2) you'd prefer to stay out of the limelight. Whatever personality type you are, thats amazing because thats what makes who you are. For the people that are already comfortable with public speaking and the likes, figuring out performing isnt that much of a stretch, but keep watching to see if any of the suggestions in this video will help you improve. For those who arent yet as comfortable with public settings, just know that your personality type probably gives you a big advantage. Typically the quieter or more introverted someone is, once they work on performing, they are sooo much more expressive and emotional during beatboxing which adds so much to the musicality and art of beatbox. But now onto the tips for getting stage swagger.
Step 1 is definitely to perform as often as you can. Literally any time you're near a microphone, a sound system and there are other people there, throw down a freestyle. This doesnt mean to throw down your best set, but why not show people some of your skills and get some heads nodding? Its a hell of a lot more fun than the feelings of regret after you walk away from an opportunity, no matter how small.
Step 2 is to practice in front of the mirror. Studies show that people who practice or speak to themselves in front of a mirror are more self confident, happy and it helps with public performances. It sounds silly but think about it like this? Who else is going to see you? Nobody! And it can only help your freestyles and stage presence.
Step 3. Once you've gotten on stage, experiment with how to connect with the crowd. Performing on stage with your eyes closed can help you focus, but you'll connect more with the audience and have a better time if you look out at them. You dont necessarily have to look people in the eyes, though that can definitely work, but just look over them or something. The more you do this the better it'll be. Remember, as much as you are there to perform, you also want the audience to enjoy what your doing so you can share the experience.
Step 4. Perform with other friends or other people. It can definitely be nerveracking to perform by yourself in front of a big crowd if you havent done it a lot. But performing with other people can help soooo much with the nerves factor.
And the fifth and final step is to have fun with it! You're beatboxing which is clearly one of you favorite things to do so dont stress about performing. Think about it: you're having fun so dont let anything stress you out.
Thats about all for todays episode but just to recap the ways to get stage presence: perform as often as you can, practice in front of the mirror, try to share the experience with the audience, perform with friends and other musicians and most importantly HAVE FUN. Thats it for today. This has been YOU Can Beatbox next time we'll be back to the regular tutorials with the dubstep roll.
