Welcome back to YOU Can beatbox where today we're going to be learning the zipper sound, also called the inward zipper which sounds like this [demo]. This sound Idea was suggested by the youtuber Jetro Angelo Ampong so thanks for the suggestion and if you guys have any sounds that you want me to do, I'll try my best and you'll also get a little shoutout. Back to the zipper sound. Many beatboxers have their own variations on this sound so I'm gonna break down the basic way of doing this.
The lip positioning is the most crucial part of this sound. In the lip oscillation tutorial I explained that the key to lip oscillations was to keep the sides of your mouth tight while leaving the middle of your lips flexible to get lip oscillations. For the zipper sound, you simply try and tighten the sides of your mouth AND keep your lips tight too. Try to kind of stretch your top and bottom lips across your teeth and make this very awkward smiley face. Thats the starting position. The next step is to note that this is an inward sound which means that you'll be sucking in air quickly. So once you have your lips in the right position, you simply suck in air, with you lips making the high pitched zipperish sound. Next, to get the zipper sound of low to high [demo] you try and stretch your lips tighter against your teeth. Its like when you try and play a rubber band like a guitar; if you stretch the rubber band, the pitch gets higher. But for this sound, play around with the lip position to get that true zipper sound.
This isn't a sound you simply throw into a beat like a snare or a kick, but you can use it as a filler or a nice break from the typical beat. Here's an example.
1) Fast dnb with break for zz
or if you want to practice it in a beat, here's a decent example:
2) B zz K^ B B zz K^ B B x2 (slow)
This is a sound that will probably take a few days or maybe weeks to get down but comment below with questions you have. But keep at it and you'll add it to your arsenal of sounds in no time. Dont forget to like and subscribe. Thanks for watching YOU Can beatbox and next time we'll be learning a backspin roll.
