People learned how to tan animal hides and furs using natural methods many thousands of years ago. The ancient art of natural tanning is one of the oldest professions known to man. In this video I'll show you how to tan a coyote hide using tannins extracted from tree bark. Bark tanning furs is easy, inexpensive and, if done right, creates a soft tanned fur which can be used for clothing or other projects. In another video I showed how to use the bark tan method to make leather from animal skin. Tanning furs with the hair on is similar to making leather but with a few differences which I'll go over in this video. This is the complete process, start to finish from raw coyote hide to finished pelt. These primitive tanning methods will work for a variety of furs such as coyote, fox, and bobcat furs. If you want to learn how to soft tan raccoon hides or other greasy furs, they require a few additional steps which I'll cover in a future video.
