Paralyzation is one of the most misunderstood threats in classic play. In B/X D&D, ghoul paralysis and carrion crawler paralysis aren’t “miss a turn” effects—they can last multiple dungeon turns, which changes how you should run the monster and how the party should respond. In this video, I break down what paralysis means at the table, how long it lasts in B/X-style rules, what a paralyzed character can do (and can’t do), and what ghouls and crawlers typically do next once they lock someone up.
We’ll also tackle the nightmare scenario: what happens if the entire party is paralyzed, and how to resolve that as a consequence scene that keeps the campaign moving instead of ending the night in frustration. You’ll get practical, table-ready guidance: telegraphing the danger, using morale and chokepoints, making turning undead matter, and keeping the paralyzed player engaged so the effect stays tense instead of boring.
