The Tupolev Tu-22M Backfire is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber. The Tu-22M was developed when it became clear that the Tupeolev Tu-22 was inadequate as a bomber. The Tu-22M is a development of the Tu-22, rather than a another version of it.
