The tunnels linking islands in Faroe are transforming the lives of communities. The Eysturoy tunnel, opened just a few months ago, is the third to be constructed, and connects Skálafjørður to the Faroese capital Tórshavn through an 11-kilometre subsea link. A drive time of over an hour is now just 16 minutes. The system connects both sides of the bay of Skálafjørður through a link to a central roundabout under the seabed.
Teitur Samuelsen, the chief executive of the company that owns the tunnel, was also in charge of its construction and describes how the project was planned, organised and financed.
