The sea runs through the 2025 Orkney International Science Festival in numerous ways. It's the bicentenary of Walter Traill Dennison, who recorded a wealth of Orkney folk tradition that would otherwise have been lost, including descriptions of "the bonnie woods of Otterswick" in a bay where today tree remnants can be dug out from beneath the sand at the lowest tides. His stories of a country beneath the sea would fit well the exploration of divers on meadows of seagrass, working to preserve and regenerate it. There is news too of progress in seabed regeneration of shellfish, and of work to clear marine litter and recycle some ocean plastic.
