Voters in several states are heading to the polls Tuesday in a series of closely watched primary elections that could shape both parties' strategies heading into the November midterms.
The contests include Democratic primaries in Wisconsin and Michigan, where progressive and self-described socialist candidates are competing for statewide nominations, as well as Republican races in South Carolina and Minnesota.
Speaking with The National News Desk, The Daily Signal national correspondent Tony Kinnett said Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary is one of the races drawing the most national attention.
"We're seeing them in battleground states like Wisconsin," Kinnett said of socialist candidates. "It definitely changes the conversation about the general election."
Kinnett argued that many of the voters propelling progressive candidates through Democratic primaries differ from the broader coalition needed to win a statewide general election.
"A lot of the voters that are pushing through these socialist candidates... are not enough to sway a general election," he said.
He suggested that younger voters, particularly those in college communities, have played an outsized role in recent Democratic primaries.
