Staying in a Japanese Ryokan and plunging in an onsen has got to be one of our favourite experiences while traveling through Japan. In this video we experience the traditional side of Japan as we try our very first ryokan which is like a luxury Japanese hotel. This ryokan had attached onsens (hot springs) that provide the perfect place to recharge after some fast-paced weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. This ryokan has many rooms but we were spoiled with a private house that had two attached onsens that we could enjoy at any time of the day. We provide a full room tour of the ryokan and take you through some of our favourite features like the tatami mat flooring, the inviting and always-on onsens, the Japanese furniture, and the peaceful luxury you can only find in a ryokan.
One of the best things at a Japanese ryokan is the quality of food and boy did this ryokan deliver! The foods of Japan have always been some of our favourites and we had the chance to try so many dishes. The presentation of the Japanese food was so beautiful that we felt bad eating it! Good thing there were 7 courses because it gave us a chance to really relax right before hopping inside one of the onsens. The onsen water was the perfect temperature and created a space for us to truly relax and wind down from our time in the bigger cities like Tokyo and Osaka. We also learned how to wear a yukata (traditional Japanese clothing usually worn in ryokans) and enjoy the peace of the traditional Japanese hotel.

The ryokan was a dream experience for us and we feel like it should be at the top of traveler's Japan bucketlist. This ryokan in Unzen, Japan is just one of many ryokans in the country. They come in all sortS of budgets and comforts and can be found on different islands across Japan, usually close to hot springs and breathtaking nature.
