The Strait of Hormuz is rapidly becoming a major battlefield in the escalating US-Iran conflict. In a significant shift, the United States has struck two Iranian government tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington says its wider attacks targeted Iranian air-defence, radar, communications and anti-ship missile capabilities. The strikes come after US officials accused Iran of attempting to attack commercial shipping and target American positions across the region. At the same time, commercial traffic through Hormuz remains severely depressed. Preliminary Kpler data showed just four commodity vessels transited the strait on Tuesday, compared with 10 the previous day and a 10-day average of around 13 vessels. Yet despite the sharp fall in vessel traffic, a US official said around 40 ships transited in and out of the waterway carrying 17 million barrels of oil.
