After teasing that he might rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order making that name change official for the U.S.

Trump stated “The Lake of America was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time actually.”

The name change comes amid escalating trade tensions with Canada that included imposing 50 per cent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods and Canada’s dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods.

“(Canada) want to be treated like a (U.S.) state, but they’re not a state,” Trump said.
