At a press conference on Saturday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will match new U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” after suspending trade negotiations with the United States.

Carney said the U.S. introduced last-minute demands that would have hurt Canada’s auto sector, restricted its ability to pursue trade deals with other countries and weakened protections for Canadian culture and sovereignty.

Canada’s retaliatory measures will target sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.

Carney also pledged support for businesses hit by the U.S. tariffs, saying Canada will “do whatever it takes” to help them weather the trade dispute.
