Though negotiations between the United States and Iran broke down more than a month ago, Monday marked the formal expiration of a preliminary peace deal that was meant to lead to long-term peace. Instead, the warring nations are preparing for potential escalation as they each refuse to cede control of one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
Iran and Oman are close to finalizing a deal that, according to Tehran, would reinforce Iranian control over much of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war was used to ship one-fifth of the world's oil.
"An understanding has been reached regarding the map of the transit route. But we had planned, and still plan, to finalize the understanding in the form of a package: the map plus a joint statement," said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
