The Trump administration is phasing out PEPFAR funding for South Africa, the programme that's funded HIV/AIDS treatment for millions of South Africans for over two decades. But that same pot of foreign aid money isn't disappearing. The State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor have opened a grant, reportedly around $1 million (some reporting puts it near $986,500, other reporting near $1.97 million for a related documentation grant), specifically to research crime, discrimination, and "hateful rhetoric" targeting Afrikaners and other minority populations in South Africa.
The group initially eyed for the grant, Lex Libertas, was founded by Ernst Roets, former AfriForum Deputy CEO, who has explicitly called for Afrikaner self-governance, ranging from cultural autonomy to full secession. The grant process has since been widened to other groups.
