President Donald Trump has signed an executive order reducing the number of vaccines recommended for all children under federal guidelines from 18 to 11, a major change to longstanding U.S. childhood vaccination recommendations.
Under the order, vaccines including hepatitis B, COVID-19 and influenza would no longer be universally recommended for children. The administration is also advising states to separate the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into individual shots administered during separate visits when possible.
Major medical organizations are pushing back. The American Academy of Pediatrics called the changes dangerous, while physicians warn requiring additional visits could reduce vaccination rates. Decades of research involving millions of children have found no evidence that vaccines cause autism.
The executive order does not itself determine school vaccination requirements. States establish immunization requirements for students.
