The Los Angeles Lakers are changing hands again in a reported record-setting $12.5 billion deal involving investor Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger.
The deal comes just one year after the Lakers were valued at approximately $10 billion, highlighting the extraordinary rise in the value of professional sports franchises. Other recent blockbuster valuations include the Boston Celtics at $6.1 billion, the Washington Commanders at more than $6 billion and the Denver Broncos at $4.65 billion.
Sports economists say scarcity, global branding and the growing value of live television and streaming rights are helping drive prices higher. The Lakers are among the world's most recognizable sports brands, giving ownership value that extends far beyond basketball.
But as franchise valuations soar, the trend is also raising questions about what increasingly expensive professional sports could ultimately mean for fans.
