US President Donald Trump has announced an initiative aimed at securing majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's proven oil reserves through partnerships with private companies.

The plan would involve development of 17 oil fields, with Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez saying it could generate $209 billion in tax revenue for Venezuela.
