I have about 20 new ones of these packed into the kiln as we speak, I’m just waiting for a cool day to fire them. It’s safe to say these shapes have taken over the workshop this year, I’m still in the midst of throwing all manner of shapes and sizes of them and it’ll continue until I manage to get the shape out of my system. Apologies for the onslaught!
There’s a lot of nuances when it comes to trimming small, delicate pots like this. Press too hard and the walls can buckle inwards and if you attach it down improperly, even the tiniest amount of incorrect force will cause the bowl to come loose and spin off centre.
In fact, I’d say they’re one of the shapes where sharp tungsten carbide tools really come into their own, as you can trim the walls to be wafer-thin without worrying about them bowing inwards, that is if you’re trimming them when they’re the right state of leather hard. A point that can be very difficult to judge when you’re just starting out, in fact, I’d say a majority of new potter’s trim on the soft side, which inevitably makes the process far more difficult than it need be.
Nonetheless, these videos aren’t really very ‘useful’ for beginners, in my opinion at least, there’s rather a lot of advanced techniques in my trimming these days that could actually end up making the process more difficult than it need be if you haven’t got much experience.
