There's natural deserts and then there's what's happening across northern Africa, where shrinking rainy seasons are turning once biodiverse Savannahs — full of human life, too, — into unlivable deserts that endanger the livelihoods of millions.

In the Sahel, Senegal, our partners Hommes et Terres plant trees in pits shaped like half-moons.

Here, it’s dry for most of the year, but then it rains heavily for just a few weeks, so you have to make the most out of this water.

Half-moons retain water for as long as possible after the rains have passed, and increase the chances of the seeds to germinate.

But we might not see these results if it weren’t for fennets! These are fences built with nets that our partners put up around the half-moons to protect the trees from grazing animals 🐐
