Lang Elliott | Treefrog Mating with Toad @LangElliott | Uploaded April 2010 | Updated October 2024, 4 hours ago.
I found this unusual pairing of a Gray Treefrog and an American Toad on an evening excursion at Land Between the Lakes, Kentucky (after a thunderstorm on April 24, 2010) . I only got a brief snippet of video; when I tried to adjust the lighting, the toad hopped into the water with the treefrog in tow and they quickly swam out of my reach.
Of course, nothing will come of this. The two species are unable to hybridize and the relationship, so to speak, is doomed to failure.
