Dos and don’ts when travelling to the culturally rich country of Vietnam.
The first thing you need to keep in mind when planning to travel to Vietnam is that it is a communist country. Because of this, they require any foreign visitor to have a visa before entering their nation.
Though it is fairly easy to acquire, both the price you need to pay for it, as well as for how long it is valid completely depends on the country you are from and the people who have interviewed you, or who processed your visa.
Another thing you need to be conscious about is what you bring in and out of the country. Religious books and other texts are usually checked at the border for any content that may speak against their government. Electronic devices such as cellphones, computers, and other similar items that can be sold both inside and outside Vietnam are also confiscated.
Besides these, however, travelling to the country and immersing in their culture is both a breeze and quite the experience.
Travelling by plane from one city to the other is the fastest, easiest way to exploring the country. If you prefer to travel by bus, however, make sure to take those from well-known and commended bus companies, as some take longer stops and are filled with passengers that it may cause inconveniences if you want to arrive at your destination in a shorter period of time.
There are also metered taxicabs available, faired depending on the type of vehicle they use. Most of the time, cars that are more luxurious have higher rates than regular, basic ones.
Language may become a barrier and the tremendous traffic caused by motorbikes may seem daunting. You should also be wary about phone and internet services as they charge expensive fees for them as well.
Hiring a translator rather than joining a tour group is cheaper and is more effective as they can personally guide you around understanding and experiencing their culture. You should not worry too much about the traffic as well, especially if you are crossing the streets. Even though it is quite unnerving, vehicles usually do stop to let people pass by from one street to the other.
Vietnam offers a lot of beautiful landmarks you should explore, as well as amazing food, spas and other such amenities you need to try, and visiting the country is well worth the experience.
