With so many hotel options in Frankfurt, you’d think choosing one would have taken forever. But for me, the decision was easy. About a year ago, I went down a rabbit hole researching working paternoster elevators still in operation across Europe (yes, I’m that kind of person). That’s how I stumbled upon the Flemings Hotel in Frankfurt, which proudly still runs one of these rare mechanical marvels. I reached out, and they invited us for a two-night stay. The hotel itself turned out to be more than just home to a nostalgic piece of engineering history. Flemings strikes a balance between business-class comfort and old-world charm, with tasteful design, warm service, and a location that couldn't be more central—right next to the Eschenheimer Turm, one of Frankfurt's oldest landmarks. From our room, we had a view that stretched over the rooftops of the city, catching both the skyline of glass towers and the occasional church steeple in the same frame.
Frankfurt often gets labeled as a financial hub - and while that’s true, it’s only part of the story. Scratch beneath the surface, and you’ll find a city that’s full of contrasts. Gleaming skyscrapers sit side-by-side with cozy cider taverns, and quiet riverfront paths cut through a fast-paced urban center. Staying at Flemings gave us the perfect jumping-off point to explore both sides of the city: the modern pulse and the historic charm. And yes, between sightseeing and schnitzels, I found plenty of time to ride that elevator.
