An early morning visit to Luxor Temple comes with plenty of advantages. The temperatures are cooler, the crowds are smaller, and the soft morning light beautifully highlights the temple's ancient stonework. It's a more peaceful time to explore one of Luxor's most impressive monuments.

Of course, early evening has its own appeal, especially when the temple is dramatically illuminated after sunset. But on this particular morning, we dragged ourselves away from the excellent breakfast at the Winter Palace Hotel and headed straight for the temple. Standing among the columns before the crowds arrived made the early start well worth it.
