The following story is fictional because it would be illegal if it was true: a kid (didnt) come up to me in the hallway leading to customs at the Mexican border and say in Spanish as i was holding Dormilona: "hey, dude, theyre gonna take your plant at customs. But if you give it to me ill walk it around the border and give it back to you". So i (didnt) give him Dormilona, and after i got through customs he (wasnt) waiting for me! Then i (didnt) give him US$15 for his trouble!
This is a video of a three day, 950 mile bus ride from Estelí Nicaragua to Mexico City.
The video captures the sights that can be seen from the bus including more than a dozen volcanoes, two of which were erupting.
The first bus ticket cost US$120 to the Mexican side of the border. It had one stop for the night at a hotel in San Salvador, El Salvador. The hotel cost US$32. The second bus from the Mexican side of the border to Mexico City cost another US$100 and drove through the night until evening the next day. The busses were as comfortable as an airplane.
We were stopped at each border and checked for passports, but between the Mexico border and Mexico City we were stopped another maybe ten times at various checkpoints so our passports could be checked again and again. The refugees who flee gang war and violence in countless numbers to seek refuge in the USA are put through incredible hardship and every effort is being made to return them to the violence and oppression they were fleeing. The fact that tens of thousands still reach the USA after all the measures put in place to stop them is testament to the tremendous number of people who attempt the journey, and the strength of their desire for safety and freedom.
There are officially no refugees in Central America. If we call them migrants then they can be returned to situations that can often be fatal. If the world recognizes them as refugees then the developed nations have an international responsibility to offer them asylum.
