Sometimes our suffering and psychic disturbance are so great that we cannot sit to meditate or hold the body still. Then trainings in movement such as walking meditation and yoga, or mindful practices of sweeping the floor and preparing food, are used to settle the mind. On retreat we may suggest that such a student spend time working in the meditation center garden. Many people have initiated healing through patiently tending the plants and digging in the earth. Such practices help to ground the fragmented mind in the body.
