How much of a construction product’s carbon footprint actually comes from transport?

Transport matters, but it may represent a much smaller proportion of embodied carbon than many people assume. For an aluminium balcony, for example, transport can account for around 0.9% of the overall carbon footprint.

This video examines where the greatest opportunities for meaningful carbon reduction can be found, including:

Reducing the quantity of material used
Rationalising unnecessary product variations
Simplifying building and balcony geometry
Re-engineering components to use materials more efficiently
Reducing embodied carbon while improving project viability

Efficient logistics remain important, but decisions made during design and manufacturing can have a considerably greater impact. Material efficiency can also reduce cost, helping project teams address carbon reduction and commercial viability together.

Are we spending too much time debating how far construction products travel when the greater opportunity is to design out carbon and cost before they are manufactured?
