The 100-lap Modified Race at Bowman Gray on 7-11-26 was the inaugural outing for scoring by transponders, and of course there was a scoring element that made a lot of people raise an eyebrow and question the race win.
A late race double file restart saw Burt Myers leading and Slate Myers P2 on the outside of the front row. The side-by-side start saw Burt and Slate cross the start/finish line still side-by-side and as the races worked down the backstretch, a car spun to the infield bringing out a caution.
The rules say that the field will reset to the previous lap's order. With transponders, that scoring is down to the inch. With the old school hand scoring, Burt would have probably retained the lead. If the P2 car had a clear lead for visual scoring, they probably would've been ruled as jumping the start.
But Burt and Slate were side-by-side, with Slate about a foot ahead at the line. And when race control gave the lineup, everyone was confused. Slate didn't want to give up the lead to his dad in this manner. Burt thought the order should go back another lap, to the last completed lap. It was strange because it was on a restart lap.
And of course, the restart came after lap 95 which made it a single file restart and a Green, White, Checkered finish.
Slate Myers was able to hold onto the lead over his Dad and win the 100-lap event.
It's Slate's 3rd win of the season, winning a 25-lapper, 50-lapper and now a 100-lapper.
