Enemy Alien is a poetic retelling of the experiences of Joseph Murakami, recreating the historical events from a personal and intimate perspective.
In an interview with FilmInk Gabriel Murphy said about the film:
“Since I was a child, I have always been trying to decipher the truth in history. That’s always been a part of my life, trying to deprogram and understand the nuances of our history.” – he explained how curiosity led him to investigate the stories behind internment camps in Australia and make the short hybrid documentary Enemy Alien.
The film was awarded Best Direction in a Student Film at the Australian Directors Guild Awards. It premiered as part of the Antenna Documentary Film Festival in October 2022 and was followed by screenings at the Brisbane International Film Festival, Revelation Perth Film Festival, Westpac Open Air Cinema, and The ReelGood Film Festival.
