People in Belmullet, Mayo, set aside their problems to enjoy an evening of music and song.

In Belmullet, County Mayo, times are hard. Travenol Laboratories cut its Belmullet workforce by half in March 1981, resulting in the loss of 113 jobs. The Mayo section of Combat Poverty closed at the end of December 1980.

The conversation is about jobs, but silence has been called for the musicians.

After a long day filming, the 'Ireland's Eye' crew welcome the chance to take a break among the local musicians. They are James Dean on accordion and fiddlers Paddy Mills from Barnatra and Austin Barrett from Lakefield.

Joining them is Treasa Ní Cheannabháin, a teacher at Coláiste Chomáin in Rossport. She sings 'Contae Mhaigh Eo' in the sean-nós tradition.

This episode of 'Ireland's Eye' was broadcast on 7 April 1981.
The reporter is Colum Kenny.
