LimeWave | Tour of beautiful snowclad Thingvellir nationalpark, southwestern Iceland @Limewave | Uploaded December 2015 | Updated October 2024, 17 hours ago.
Thingvellir nationalpark is one of Icelands most famous sites. The continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be clearly seen and the canyon Almannagjá is the largest one. The water in the rifts are extremely clear and it’s easy to see all the coins in the bottom of Nikulásargjá, also known as Peningagjá. Öxará is the name of the river running through the area. In the middle of the landscape lies the small church Þingvallakirkja along with a small graveyard. Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland is located on the southern end. The Icelandic Parliament, was established here at Þingvellir as early as 930, and remained here until 1798.
