With the vocals out of the way, some of the more subtler elements can shine through here in this backing version. One such element being that shamisen that plays the main melody very quietly towards the left side during the choruses. I had actually wanted to try using a flute of some sort for this, but in the end, a subtle shamisen wound up fitting nicely into the mix.
I sadly didn't get to record my bass guitar for this cover. As much as I wanted to, I wound up needing to turn to some synth options in order to get the tone I was searching for. In fact, the synth-bass bus wound up becoming a big super layer, consisting of like 8 or 9 different sounds. I also messed with an LFO to fiddle with the volume of this mix-bus, the giving it a bit of a "pump" sound, on top of the "pumps" from sidechaining the bus to the kick.
Rhythm guitars were fun, *chugga-chugga*.
I really wanted to play the main melody alongside the vocals, but it didn't quite mesh well. So instead, since I'm still going through my "whoa, double tapping!"-phase right now, I wound up tapping out a little melody during the choruses.
I'm also really happy with how the new clean guitar parts sounded. I wanted to make this cover heavy-sounding, but not like angry-metal-man kind of heavy. I wanted to capture a mixture of dark and light, a bit of yin and yang, I suppose... Fitting now that I think about it as I type this. So I went all in on my "Aluminum-Metal" sound; a nice light metal.
As I worked on this, I could hear how I wanted to do the verses in my head. I was imagining choirs, strings, and maybe even an organ to accompany the verse. The organ wound up getting cut, but the new choir and string parts really add a nice texture to the verses. Actually, the strings wind up playing very quietly throughout the song, just backing up everything else. The strings I think really lighten things up a bit, it sounds more optimistic and bright compared to the darker mood the choir and rhythm guitars are giving off. The contrast between these two moods is most notable during the verses.
I also wound up using a nice synth sound that I just started using not too long ago (used it in the Undertale cover right before this one). It just adds such a nice rhythmic feel to the track. You can hear it fairly well at 0:38. Also, I should point out that I didn't recreate those high-pitched distorted whistles/squelches from the original. I've been a bad boy and went and sampled that bit from the original and layered it underneath, shhh don't tell nobody, pls don't sue :(.
Oh, one last thing that I remembered that I forgot to mention in the lengthy vid description of the other video. I wound up doing this song one half-step lower in pitch than the original. This was totally an accident at first, because while I was still thinking of doing the original version from Touhou 4, I had assumed that the remix version was also in the same key/tuning. By the time I realized that this assumption was wrong, I had already been recording the rhythm guitar parts. No big deal though, it actually worked out pretty nicely. After all, metal logic dictates that everything is heavier the lower you downtune your guitars (Drop B for any inquiring fellow guitarists out there).

Alright all, time to get your thrash on m/! (or technically, in this specific case: Death Metal)
So upon initially trying to learn this one, I realized that Ive never actually done something with so much tremolo picking before.
I actually had to change and adjust my picking technique in order to play it properly. Unfortunately, my wrist was sore and worn out by the time I finally got my technique sorted out.
To play things safe, I gave my wrist a few days to recoup. The weather was also particularly stormy and was causing the power to drop out. The plus side to this recovery period, was that I finally sat down to play through YS 1 & 2 for the PSP (emulated on my Pi, because unlike my desktop, thanks to its low power consumption, it remained powered through the brownouts/voltage-drops).
Anyhow, wrist ready, the skies clear, it was time to down lots of coffee! Playing fast wasnt so bad once I had gotten the technique down, however, playing the same thing on the bass... now that was exhausting.
I pretty much followed things straight from the MIDI. I did drop the tempo down to 140 at 1:29 to add a little variety and plus I liked the feel of it. Kinda made me think of Pantera for some reason.
I also broke a rule of mine and scooped the mids a lot more than I normally would. I feel like this guitar-tone fit the song fairly well.
I also added some swelling choirs just to sprinkle a little extra ominous/sinister spice to this track. That and the only other thing I added was the guitar solo.
This one was a pretty good learning experience, since Ill be better prepared for any heavy trem-picking songs in the future. That, or just trem-picking in general, since I never realized my technique for trem-picking was actually pretty bad before compared to now.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this fast, high-octane addition to the D64D2 Marathon! ~DAR

Should I Turn This Up For You?
Surprise, all! My decision to cover this one was so spontaneous that I even surprised myself!
So after wrapping up stuff for Cyclic Divide, I was still craving a bit more vocal stuff. I wanted to do something with a little more grit, since CD was more on the lighter side (for the most part). I wound up goofing around with a couple of songs (that shall remain a surprise until the time is right), however things didnt really go all that well. So while unwinding from my session, I decided to just put this song on, cause why not?
Break the Cycle was (and still is) one of my favorite albums. For the past couple of years, I would have songs from it come up in my shuffle while driving. Every time For You came on, Id always think, man, Id love to do a cover of this one sometime. (there are also a few others I shared the same sentiment for too)
It wound up on the backburner the whole entire time until a few days ago when I messed around with it on a whim. Felt like things really clicked, so I decided to go all in on getting the cover done!
I had a lot of fun putting this one together. As always, I tried to stay faithful to the original, while also trying to give it a few things make it my own. Ill save my guitar and instrumental commentary for the Instr. video description.
Now, for a thought dump on the vocals. It was a blast to use this one to explore and experiment with my voice. Had my usual clean vocals during the chorus, turned on the grit during the verses, got croaky during parts of the bridge, and even threw in some screams during the end of the bridge! I was very happy and surprised when I pulled off those screams without coughing or blowing out my voice.
I also decided to further combine the things Ive learned about doing vocal stuff. Combining the knowledge Ive gained from doing FAME and the recent Cyclic Divide redux. I decided to keep the vocals straight-down the center here, and tried not to get too crazy with my layering. I did make up a couple of vocal harmonies for the chorus, to give it a little extra something. It was also pretty fun getting right up on the mic and doing the croaky voice (the bit during And I feel like...).
As for the video, I WAS going to have me up there lip-syncing and stuff, but wound up scrapping it during recording. Looked and felt too silly, so I decided to stick to the good ol guitar-dance (because the guitar-dance looks much cooler than noiselessly trying to sing along on camera).
This little music/cover side-quest has definitely been a great learning experience, and has certainly opened up new doors for other covers in the future.

Ah, another old release remade and brought forward into modern times! As much as I really loved SoM and RISEN, New Genesis will always be my favorite of the three early Stratocaster era of my releases.
This was also the first of my works that was built around a story from the start. Ive also always been very proud of the album art that I made for this one too. Not only is having the big ol cosmic and ethereal snake pretty kickass, but its also very fitting for the story of the album. Obviously said snake is the Ouroboros, representing infinity, and the cycle of life and death. However rather than have it eating its own tail, its left open-ended. Just as the ending of the albums story is left open-ended as to what the fate of humanity is by the conclusion.
The symbol residing within the serpent may also probably look familiar as well. It is the World Triad symbol. I wound up combining some of the interpreted meanings of this ancient symbol from both its use as a Chinese symbol, its use in Gnosticism, as well as the Shinto version of it, Mitsu tomoe. Long story short is that this is supposed to represent the spirit of humanity itself, swirling and going about with its own cycle.
So in relation to the album, we have the spirit of humanity itself trapped within a vicious cycle. With the small hope and opening of potentially escaping this infinity. New Genesis follows the story of an ancient human civilization on the brink of destruction. They take to the stars, and after much time and hardship, humanity manages to begin anew. But, as the civilization reaches its peak once more, it once again faces the threat of complete annihilation.
But yeah, thats the deeper meaning and backstory behind the album art!

I really love the mood and pacing of this track. Starts off soft and melancholic, then the heavy guitars fade in, and when the drums finally kick in, you know its time to kick ass! That back and forth between the clean guitar parts and heavy parts make for a nice contrast.
Very happy to finally get to use my Stratocaster for the audio-side of things during this cover! I really wanted to try and imitate the Clean Guitar sound from the MIDI, so the humbuckers on my Ibanez just werent going to cut it. This was a job for some single-coil pickups! After slapping a chorus effect on to the clean parts, I managed to get the exact sound I was hearing in my head!
Ive kept the structure of the song exactly the same as the original. I only added a few small new lead parts here and there. Like the parts from 0:50-1:42 and 2:17-2:34 were originally just the rhythm guitar parts. I felt compelled to try adding some things to go along with these segments. I had also threw in some choirs for some dramatic effect. I also finally got to use my tremolo/whammy bar for the first time since the RED PLANET albums! One of the new parts I really enjoyed doing was the bit from 1:59-2:17/5:42-6:00. I really liked using that hammer-on/pull-off technique to get that sort of Schism sound.
The fast bits were nice, but challenging for me (since Im not really that kind of style of guitarist!). I also always totally forget how to properly play the parts once its time to get around to the video production (and always usually have to go through the slow process of relearning the parts all over again)! Since Im running on a tight schedule of new content every 2-4 days, Ive gotta cut some corners (so no guitar dance in this one!). So forgive my laziness/haste when it comes to that!
The only other little new addition were the screams from 4:24-4:32. I swear, that scream of mine has become a stock sound-effect for me now! Used it for the RED PLANET albums, the DOOM 3 cover, and for a few other things I think. I also threw in DoomGuys death scream for 4:29-4:32 since it felt right for that build-up before everything kicks back in.
Anyhow, I enjoyed cutting together the gameplay for this video. I really like switching between the original D64 level and the D64D2 conversion. I decided to throw on a tint of green for the D64D2 level in order to imitate the lighting of the original level (plus it makes switching between the two a little more visually consistent).

Shoutout and thanks goes out to longtime subscriber, Raees Kamaar, for requesting this rockin tune for the Subscriber Appreciation Event!
So, this one was a bit tricky at first, as the original was only a 30 second loop. In the beginning, I wasnt sure where I was going to go with this one. However, I knew that I definitely wanted to have it open up with some epic orchestral rendition of the song. Shortly after that, I chugged and noodled around to my hearts content!
I tried to stay true to the direction and spirit of the original. The original had this very heroic and triumphant-sounding air about it. I wanted to amplify that feeling a bit more, and I also wanted to impart a heavenly tone to this cover as well. I think that the additions of the choir and the clean-guitar/synth combo achieved this fairly well!
As I worked on this cover, I really got a sort of Ace Combat vibe from it all, so I certainly enjoyed myself while working on this one! Anyways, as always, I hope you all enjoy the cover and hope you all look forward to more covers! ~DAR
