🎵 TOP OF THE POPS — THE SHOW THAT DEFINED BRITISH MUSIC! 🎵
For generations, Thursday night meant one thing in millions of British homes — TOP OF THE POPS.
BBC Top of the Pops first went on air on 1 January 1964, broadcast from a converted church studio in Manchester. The first programme was presented by Jimmy Savile and featured some of the biggest names of the day, including The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Hollies and The Beatles.
The idea was simple but brilliant — count down the biggest records in the UK charts and bring the stars into the studio to perform them.
Through the 1960s and 70s, Top of the Pops became essential viewing. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, T. Rex, Slade, Queen, ABBA, Elton John, Rod Stewart and countless others appeared on the famous stage.
It wasn’t just the singers either. Dance groups such as Pan’s People became stars in their own right, performing routines when the original artist wasn’t available.
By the 1980s and 90s, the programme was still introducing Britain to the biggest new acts — from Duran Duran and Wham! to Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Oasis, Blur and the Spice Girls.
For many viewers, Top of the Pops was where you first SAW the people behind the records you had been hearing on the radio.
The regular weekly programme finally came to an end in July 2006 after an incredible 42 years.
But Top of the Pops never really disappeared. Christmas and New Year specials continued for years, and those classic performances are still remembered by millions today.
