The lyrics have symbolism on several levels simultaneously: personal , political, and philosophical, but the overall message encouraged unity (pretty obvious when you consider the title and its repetition between each verse)

The levels of symbolism are not well defined, and some, such as "joojoo eyeball" are obscure , and I must admit that I still don't "get" at age 66, even after thinking about it since I first heard the song (and loved it) at age 10.
