+ 2024 BMW 5 Series.
The 2024 BMW 5 Series sport sedan returns with a fresh look, larger size, more powerful engines, and a full complement of in-car and driver safety tech. The new generation of the brand's just-right "Goldilocks" sedan falls between the full-size BMW 7 Series luxury shuttle and the compact 3 Series.
New four- and six-cylinder engines yield more power and likely better fuel economy. We won't know until the Environmental Protection Agency releases its estimates, but we'd expect the base 5 Series to return around 30 mpg in combined city and highway driving, and 35-36 mpg on the highway — nice numbers for a 255-horsepower midsize sedan. For now, the 5 Series is only available in base 530i form; the six-cylinder-powered 540i arrives later this year. BMW hasn't announced an M-Series or plug-in hybrid version yet, but we'd expect to see replacements for those outgoing options next year. A new fully electric BMW i5 is also available and reviewed separately.

The BMW 5 Series has been redesigned for 2024, and in addition to new looks and a roomier cabin, it now includes an all-electric i5 model.

We’ve not driven the i5 yet, but expect it will offer the same combination of dynamic driving character and executive class posh that's built into the rest of the lineup.
Although it won’t be cheap, the 2024 BMW i5, which starts at $68,500 in rear-wheel-drive configuration, will compete well in pricing against other midsize premium electric sedans.
The most likely competitors are the Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan, which starts almost $8,000 above the BMW's base price, and the Genesis Electrified G80, which ups the ante an additional $4,000. (The Genesis is available only with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain and is actually priced a few thousand lower than the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive versions of both the i5 and the EQE). As a bonus, the i5 is competitive in range, getting up to 295 miles per charge (BMW’s estimate).
2023 Toyota Crown.
It has been 50 years since Toyota last sold its Crown sedan in the U.S., but the model was introduced in Japan in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown. It has been Toyota's mainstream sedan there ever since, the choice of families, executives, taxi drivers, and police.
Competition in the non-luxury large sedan segment is almost gone. Three rivals — the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Nissan Maxima — are being discontinued in 2023. That leaves the Accord Hybrid and VW Arteon. Some shoppers might consider the Genesis G80, Audi A6, and Volvo S90 mild hybrids, all of which cost more and aren't likely to be cross-shopped with the Toyota Crown. Based on appearance and premium content, though, the Crown can proudly hold its head high in that crowd.
2024 Honda Accord.
Positives.
Exterior is still fresh after last year's redesign. Spacious backseat and trunk. Hybrid models are quick and extremely fuel-efficient.
Considerations.
No all-wheel-drive option. Not as much rear headroom as in some rivals. Key competitors offer more power.

Hyundai's decision to make the second of its Ioniq EV models a sedan brings a welcome bit of variety to an SUV-dominated market. Its arching, aerodynamic shape helps deliver up to 361 miles of driving range, but will give design pundits plenty to argue about. We find it attractive and better looking in person than in photos.
There aren't many sedans left in the market, and fewer still in the EV segment, so the Ioniq 6 pretty much stands alone. Its closest competitors likely will be the Tesla Model 3 sedan, at which it is specifically aimed, as well as the Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover, Polestar 2 hatchback sedan, and BMW i4 sedan.
