A complete makeover for 2023 turned Toyota’s ugly duckling hybrid into a true beauty. The five-seat compact hatchback lost headroom and cargo space in its transformation but gained improved handling, a more comfortable ride, an updated interior, and a 60% boost in power while retaining its best-in-class fuel efficiency. The base model actually gained 1 mpg over the old L Eco trim.
Crossovers and SUVs are rapidly replacing sedans and sedan-like hatchbacks such as the Prius in car shoppers’ affections, but the Prius still has a few direct competitors, and in most comparisons, the Prius wins.
Despite its lowered head room, the Prius has a surprisingly airy front cockpit area with the most front legroom among its rivals. It ties with the Corolla hybrid, however, for least rear legroom and stands alone with the least rear headroom. Even so, the 2023 Prius has more power and better overall fuel efficiency than any of its competitors and, hands down, looks a whole lot nicer.
2024 Subaru Impreza.
Subaru has made its name by, in the parlance of today, staying in its lane. Compared to its larger Japanese competitors, Subaru’s focus on practical, affordable, and adventurous cars and SUVs has earned it a loyal fanbase. It hasn’t hurt that, for a time, the automaker also dominated global rally racing, highlighting the brand’s robust build quality and advanced all-wheel-drive systems.
The 2024 model kicks off the Impreza’s sixth generation, but it remains largely the same as before. The front and rear ends have a new grille and head- and taillight style. Under the metal, the Impreza uses more structural adhesive, which Subaru says helps make the car 10% stiffer and more resistant to twist and flex. But the Impreza’s dimensions haven’t changed much — it’s slightly taller — meaning it’s as easy to park and maneuver as before.
2024 Honda Civic.
Positives.
Sharp design inside and out. Excellent performance and fuel economy. Si and Type R performance models are fun to drive.
Considerations.
Still no hybrid option. Standard 7-inch touchscreen is a bit small these days.
2023 Toyota GR86.
Positives.
Feels faster than its horsepower rating suggests. Responds quickly to driver inputs. Well-designed interior.
Considerations.
Rear seats are good for storage, bad for passengers. Exhaust note isn't very pleasing.
Last year's redesign fixed the Toyota GR86's minor flaws and re-established it as one of the best sports-car bargains on the market. It still doesn't have much room inside, but if affordable performance is a top priority, there are few cars that deliver like the GR86.

Positives.
Responsive handling. Surprisingly powerful four-cylinder engine. More affordable than most performance cars.
Considerations.
Limited rear-seat space. Unimpressive interior. Not very fuel-efficient for a four-cylinder engine.
When it comes to affordable performance, it doesn't get much better than the Subaru BRZ. Light, quick, and easy to handle, the BRZ is a back-to-basics coupe that's engaging yet comfortable enough to drive every day.

The Hyundai Sonata is a sedan with something for everyone. Its lineup of nine trims includes three gas engines and a hybrid for those who prioritize fuel economy. The base engine delivers good performance, but midrange trims get a more responsive option. There's also the performance engine of the N Line. The interior is comfortable and uses high-quality trims that are uncommon on a sedan at this price. Add in a comprehensive infotainment system and a wide range of standard and available safety features, and the Sonata is a great choice.
