Welcome to LondonCityGirl -- today we're going to countdown the Top 10 Most Controversial Films of All Time

At no. 10 is In the Realm of the Senses (1976) - Based on a true story this Japanese film is the tale of a dangerously sensual love affair between an inn keeper and his servant girl. The graphic sex scenes shocked audiences.

At no. 9 is Lolita (1962) and Lolita (1997) - Lolita started out as a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, chronicling the story of a man's obsession with a 12 year old girl. It had two major adaptations, a 1962 version by Stanley Kubrick and 1997 version by Adrian Lyne.

At no. 8 is the Passion of the Christ (2004) - The Passion of the Christ directed by Mel Gibson was released in 200. The film focused on the, torture, death, and resurrection of Jesus and was criticized for its graphic violence and was also accused of being anti-semetic.

At no. 7 is The Birth of a Nation (1915) - The Birth of a Nation is a silent epic which tells the story of two families during and after the American Civil War.

At no. 6 is Basic Instinct (1992) - Basic Instinct was directed by Paul Verhoeven and the film starred Sharon Stone who played a seductive serial killer.

At no. 5 is Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - Cannibal Holocaust is told in a found footage style. A film crew crew goes into the depths of the Amazon to film cannibalistic tribes. The film was banned in several countries and director Ruggero Deodato's film license was revoked for three years.

At no. 4 is The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - Martin Scorsese's masterpiece depicted Jesus as a man who faced the same temptations as other men most notably lust. Scenes which showed Jesus engaged in sexual activity with Mary Magdalene caused outrage.

At no. 3 is Natural Born Killers (1994) - Natural Born Killers is the story of an unhinged couple who go on a killing spree and are raised to the status of cult folk heroes by the modern media.

At no. 2 is Last Tango in Paris (1972) - Last Tango in Paris stars Marlon Brando as a grieving widow who has a passionate anonymous affair with a young French woman played by Maria Schneider. The scene that caused the most controversy was when Marlon Brando used butter as a lubricant prior to anal sex.

At no. 1 is a Clockwork Orange (1971) - Director Stanley Kubrick created a visually arresting world in the dystopian classic a Clockwork Orange. We follow the character of Alex who with his gang of friends embark on a spree of "ultra violence".

There were allegations of the film causing copy cat violence and it was named in two cases of assault and one gang rape.

But of course this list is not exhaustive, there are many other controversial films, for example Salo, A Serbian Film and even the relatively tame The Da Vinci Code had its fair share of controversy.
