It has been a great time to be a JRPG fan over the recent few years. We have had loads of amazing games released, and plenty more coming our way. But when you think about it, most of these titles are based off established series as opposed to being completely new IP. However, sometimes the developers meet us half way, with new titles that are spin-offs from existing series.
That’s what this video is all about. I’m going to be counting down my top 10 JRPG spinoff titles that everyone needs to play.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue! If you’re a JRPG veteran, chances are that you’ve plated this classic in the past. If not, then I’m so happy that you can now experience the HD remaster on modern consoles.
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue is THE classic JRPG experience, in every way imaginable. Personally, I played this classic about 20 years ago, and I didn’t remember much at all, but in many ways, it truly is a timeless classic.
If you’re a fan of Retro style JRPGs, both Lunar 1 and 2, come highly recommented.

Folklore is a title that has flown under the radar for a lot of gamers. Developed by the now, nonexistent, Game Republic and released exclusively for the Playstation 3, in 2007, it seems to have been overshadowed by a load of other, huge releases of the time such the console versions of The Elders Scrolls: Oblivion and Mass Effect.
I played Folklore for the first time years ago, and there’s a few things about it that really stood out to me, such as the dark, atmospheric art design, and mythological fairy tale setting. The way that Folklore combines elements of action, adventure, role playing, and graphic story telling is why this game is definitely worth checking out.

If you’re unfamiliar, Penny blood is an upcoming JRPG that was successfully funded via Kickstarter, back in 2022. It is spiritual successor to Shadow Hearts, which is one of my favorite JRPG series of all time.
Pennyblood is currently being developed by many of the core Shadow Hearts staff. We havent received much info yet, but the trailer does look absolutely badass, and has some serious Shadow Hearts vibes.

Less than a year after it was first announced, Piranha Bytes newest RPG, Elex II, is finally here. This German developer is well known for the Risen and Gothic series, with some of these titles being met with critical acclaim.
It seems that Piranha Bytes took some of the problems of Elex 1 to heart, as many of these issues have been ironed out. While certainly not perfect, I was surprised addictive Elex 2 was. So what makes ELEX 2 so great and where does it fall short? Hopefully this review will answer all of your questions.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster number IV, now things are starting to get serious! The fourth game in the series, originally titled FF2 in the US, was first released in 1991, and since then, has received loads of different versions, and even a complete remake for the DS in 2007.
At the time of its release FF4 was met with critical acclaim, with its revolutionary Active Time Battle (ATB) mechanics, and storytelling being the stand out features.
I can highly recommend playing FF4 if you want to go back and get a taste of Final Fantasy history, and this Pixel Remaster is a great way to do so.

There’s something about organized crime, and gangster themed media that has always interested me. Empire of Sin, in one such title that has been on my radar since day 1. This strategy RPG is set in in Chicago during the 1920s, where you take the role of a Crime boss, in charge of managing their empire, and taking over the city. Now, Empire Sin is a little rough around the edges, with many bugs and glitches, but it has some brilliant ideas. There is so much potential here, with many addictive mechanics, but also has a lot of room for improvement. This review is going to look into what works well, and what doesn’t, and hopefully help you decide if Empire of Sin is worth playing.
