In 2021, the hip-hop community has suffered the loss of over 250 rappers who made great strides in the rap game.
The number of rappers who lost their lives to gun violence in 2021 is nothing short of deplorable. At least 200 rappers were fatally shot this year; some hometown heroes, others nationally celebrated artists like Young Dolph. Meanwhile, there were many other rappers and Hip Hop figures who died of drug overdoses, poor health and cancer. From former Bad Boy rapper Black Rob and Kangol Kid of U.T.F.O. to Blackalicious MC Gift of Gab and the lovable Biz Markie, the devastating losses just kept coming. DMX, Lil Loaded, Baby Ceo, Prince Markie Dee, Shock G, KTS Dre, Emani 22, Slim 400, Gonzo, Drakeo The Ruler... the list goes on & on.
But the gun violence was unprecedented this year. To illustrate just how dire the situation is, I have compiled a list of not just all of the legends we’ve lost this year, but also the aspiring local rappers and slightly more established artists who died a violent death — and it’s an unnecessarily long list.
The music industry also lost a number of rappers in 2020 (200 to be specific) — from OGs like MF Doom and Ecstasy of Whodini to up-and-coming artists such as Pop Smoke and King Von. Check out the video for 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtlMvWbs-ao
Hip-hop has been the most polarizing genre of music in the past two decades. As hip-hop maintains its title, a lot has changed about the genre, such as the lyrics. Hip-hop has two phases, old school and new school each of which give off a different vibe.
Old School “Hip-Hop” has music based prevalently on African American culture. Artists such as Tupac, Biggie Smalls, and Eazy-E often rap about the struggles of growing up and the work they put in to get where they are today.
In popular songs such as “Changes” by Tupac and “Juicy” by Biggie Smalls, the artists explain how they went from “negative to positive” as Biggie put it.
Old school hip-hop is still popular today and is regarded as “classic” by many hip-hop fans.
“New school” hip-hop has different types of lyrics. Rappers from today’s generation sing typically about girls, money, and cars they have. Some even sing about how they do drgs, drink alchl, and party which sets a bad example for some listeners. Some of these rappers today did not have it as hard as rappers back in the old days.
People who grew up listening to Tupac, Biggie, Eazy-E, and so on typically do not enjoy hip-hop in today’s era. Songs written when rap was introduced were lyrically better because rappers were able to tell a story using words that rhyme and flow.
Some songs are also more appealing to fans because they can relate to the struggles their favorite rappers faced.
People of this generation are used to listening to new school hip-hop which is the most played genre on the radio. These same fans reject old school Hip-Hop as a part of the music genre. There are even rappers who know nothing about the most influential Hip-Hop artists.
Growing up listening to Eminem has caused me to fall in love with him as an artist. He introduced me to Hip-Hop. But I noticed a change in the music industry over the past few decades. This channel will document how Hip-Hop has evolved over the past 40+ years.

Eminem’s beef with MGK ends with the release of his MGK diss track, “K*llshot.” Earlier this month, after getting dissed on Eminem’s Kamikaze, MGK released “Rap Devil,” which found the Cleveland rapper claiming Em tried to blackball him from the music industry after he tweeted about his daughter, Hailie, being “hot as f*ck” in 2012. On “K*llshot,” Em takes Kelly to task for a variety of things including him sporting a man bun and his choice of breakfast food. As most of you know, Em took aim at MGK on the Kamikaze track “Not Alike,” rapping: “I’m talkin’ to you, but you already know who the f*ck you are, Kelly/I don’t use sublims and sure as f*ck don’t sneak-diss/But keep commenting on my daughter Hailie.” It was a response to MGK’s 2012 tweet in which he called Eminem’s daughter, Hallie, “hot as f*ck.” MGK, who previously accused Em of trying to blackball him, responded to the record with his own diss track, “Rap Devil.” Eminem told Sway he wasn’t pleased about MGK’s comments about his child; however, that wasn’t the real reason he took a shot at him. “You know you go down a f*cking wormhole of YouTube and whatever, right? So I see, ‘MGKs talks about Eminem’s daughter’ or whatever, right? So I’m like, ‘What the f*ck?’ I click on it,” he explained. “Then he starts doing a press run, basically, about Hailie. I’m like, ‘What the f*ck? Yo, my man better chill, right?’ So, that’s not why I dissed him. The reason I dissed him is actually a lot more petty than that. The reason that I dissed him is because he got on—first he said, Im the greatest rapper alive since my favorite rapper banned me from Shade 45, or whatever he said, right? Like Im trying to hinder his career. I dont give a f*ck about your career. You think I actually f*ckin think about you? You know how many f*ckin rappers that are better than you? Youre not even in the f*ckin conversation. Em then referred to MGKs verse on Tech N9nes No Reason (The Mosh Pit Song), in which is believed to include a reference to Eminems Rap God cut: I pop cherries and popstars, you popsicles is not hard/Popped in on the top charts out the cop car/To remind yall you just rap and not God/And I dont care who got bars. Now I’m in this f*ckin weird thing, because I’m like, I gotta answer this motherf*cker, he said. And every time I do that, it makes that person—as irrelevant as people say I am in hip-hop—I make them bigger by getting into this thing, where Im like I want to destroy him. But I also dont want to make him bigger. You know what Im saying? Because now youre a f*cking enemy [...] Ill leave it at that. Im not sure exactly what Im going to do at this point right now. Eminem said he heard Rap Devil, and admitted that the track wasnt bad for him—hes got some good lines in it. Em also shot down the rumors that he reached out to Diddy in an attempt to get MGK to apologize. MGK made this claim in Rap Devil. Ive never made a f*ckin call to Diddy. The New York rapper spoke to Conspiracy Worldwide Radio to discuss both of them recently. First, he addressed the Budden and Royce issue, explaining that he was frustrated with both rappers over comments theyve made about him, but revealed that hes since backed off the lyrical war with them.
I wanted to tell the listeners what recent decisions Ive been struggling with... I decided to stand down with any campaign against Royce and Joey, and Ima tell you why, Bis began. Earlier today, I saw some shit that Slaughterhouse had to say about me, and obviously, Im frustrated with how n****s talk about respect, and then do a 180 in the same breath. I respect Canibus, so forth and so on, and then in the same breath turn around and say hes finished, he dont sound like he used to. If you say you gonna respect somebody, then say that and keep it there. Once you start to talk about you respect somebody, just keep it there.
Royce said it himself, Joey said it himself, Yo, yo, Canibus was so good, and he was this and he was that and the third...I heard that part. If theyd have said that and left it there, you never woulda heard no response from me, he explained. So, you know, I just wanted to put that out there, cuz its important for them to know that, he continued.
Concluding his discussion regarding Slaughterhouse, he said he wished the best for the Shady Records supergroup.
Listen, all in all, I want to see them win. I want to see Slaughterhouse win. And Ive proven that, in spite of my response to the flagrant disrespect coming from all sides about my craft and my ability as an emcee, Canibus explained. Im not a hater, and Im not looking for attention from them or any of their followers.
Following the recent release of the Canibus diss track, “Lyrical Law vs. Joey Cupcakes,” the members of Slaughterhouse turned to Twitter to share their immediate reactions to the Queen’s rappers diss.
“Just for the record Canibus been on sum bullshit with SH for months behind the scenes tho,” Crooked I Tweeted yesterday, May 5. “I dont give #2shits about it either way.. I ignored him when he when he was on bs with me.. Didnt kno dat huh?”
As the title states, “Lyrical Law vs. Joey Cupcakes” is primarily targeted at Joe Budden although Canibus doesn’t hesitate in calling out other members of Slaughterhouse. Ironically, Budden didn’t offer much of a reaction on Twitter following the song’s release.
On the other hand Royce Da 5’9, who Canibus referred to as a “moist buttwipe” on “Lyrical Law vs. Joey Cupcakes,” was quite short with his response to the track.
“Dear Canibus.. ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZzz,” said Royce Da 5’9 via Twitter.
“Why everybody just always diss me n Joey? Lol it’s 2 more gentleman in our group. Why yall never bother them? Scared? Lol prolly so,” Royce later added.
