The Cache la Poudre River runs through Fort Collins, Colorado. This video explains how and why the city has implemented six strategies to mitigate the risk of annual flooding as well as extreme events:
• an emergency flood notification system;
• improvements to infrastructure that accommodate river flow;
• a community education and outreach campaign;
• the preservation and restoration of open space in floodplains;
• constructing detention areas to minimize flash flooding events;
• and new regulations and building standards that protect the people and property of Fort Collins.
These principles apply to any city prone to flooding.
